Every Registered NMN, NR and Urolithin A Trial: A 2026 Registry Census

This is a company white paper from Mt. Angel Vitamins, not a peer-reviewed article. It counts the NMN, nicotinamide riboside (NR) and urolithin A trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov as of 20 October 2026. We screened 376 records and kept 191 trials in scope. Most are small, and 92 have finished. Only 19 have posted results on the registry, and 31 completed trials have a linked paper. The census grades no outcome.

If you're not a researcher

  • How many? As of 20 October 2026, we found 191 registered trials that test NMN, nicotinamide riboside (NR) or urolithin A. We screened 376 records to find them.
  • How big? Most are small. 146 of the 191 register 99 people or fewer, and the median is 48.
  • How far along? 92 are completed. The other 99 are still open, stopped, or listed with an unknown status.
  • The surprise: only 19 trials have posted results on ClinicalTrials.gov, and only 31 of the 92 completed trials have a paper we could link to.
  • What it means: a registration is a plan, not a result. Treat a small or unpublished trial as a question, not an answer.
  • Where to go next: the nicotinamide riboside monograph covers the finished NR trials. The NMN monograph and the urolithin A monograph cover the other two compounds.

How many trials are registered?

As of 20 October 2026, ClinicalTrials.gov lists 191 trials that use NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), nicotinamide riboside (NR, a form of vitamin B3) or urolithin A as an intervention. Of those, 189 are interventional and 2 are observational. Only 92 have finished, and only 19 have posted results on the registry. Thirty-one of the completed trials have a linked paper. These are counts of registrations. This census grades no outcome.

How we searched

We searched ClinicalTrials.gov on 20 October 2026 using the intervention field only. We applied no status, phase or start-date limits, so withdrawn, terminated, unknown-status and unpublished records are included. The first, combined query returned 186 records. The fifteen search strings below returned 376 unique records between them. Duplicates were merged on the NCT number, the registry's trial ID.

# Search string (intervention field) Why it is included
1 nicotinamide mononucleotide OR nicotinamide riboside OR urolithin A Combined starting query (186 records)
2 nicotinamide mononucleotide Full name of NMN
3 NMN Abbreviation of NMN
4 nicotinamide riboside Full name of NR
5 NR Abbreviation of NR
6 nicotinamide ribonucleoside Alternative name for NR
7 Niagen Trade name for NR
8 EH301 Study code
9 NRPT Study code for NR with pterostilbene
10 urolithin A Compound name
11 Mitopure Trade name for urolithin A
12 AMAZ-02 Study code
13 AMAZ-02 OR urolithin A Study code or compound name
14 NAD+ precursor Generic class name
15 MIB-626 Study code for an investigational product (see below)

We screened the 376 records on their titles, interventions and summaries, and excluded 169 for the reasons below. We then pulled the full registry record for the remaining 207. That record shows whether results are posted, the sponsor class, the enrollment type and any linked publications. Sixteen of the 207 were excluded on the full record, which leaves 191 trials in scope.

Code Reason for exclusion Records
R1 Unrelated trial that a search string matched 155
R2 Related compound that is not NMN, NR or urolithin A, such as nicotinamide, niacin, niacinamide or reduced NMN 12
R3 Record names none of NMN, NR or urolithin A as the tested compound 7
R4 Food, juice, extract or named brand in which urolithin A is only a metabolite, or a brand with no NMN, NR or urolithin A named 11
Excluded in total 185
In scope 191

Seven in-scope records use the code MIB-626. Four state beta-NMN in the record, and one is identified as beta-NMN in its linked paper (PMID 40746868). The other two give only the code (NCT04817111 and NCT05040321). We kept all seven and marked the two code-only records in the appendix, so readers can set them aside.

Each completed trial was checked against PubMed by NCT number and by title. A trial counts as having a linked publication when a PubMed record names its NCT number, or when its title matches the registration. Three links rest on a title match alone, without the NCT number in the abstract (PMID 35235774, PMID 41502156 and PMID 41858901). Two other matches listed several trial numbers without a clear link to one trial, and we set them aside. One 2026 recruitment paper lists NCT03743636 among 14 trial numbers (PMID 42035974). We did not count it as a results publication.

The median registered enrollment is 48 people. The range runs from 0 (three withdrawn studies) to 650 (an active urolithin A study in healthy adults, NCT07060898). Completed trials are smaller, with a median of 41 people. Registered enrollment is the actual count for finished trials and the target for open ones. Across all 191 records it adds up to 14,170 people.

Fifty-four trials began in 2025 or 2026, and 62 began in 2020 or earlier. Most records (100) carry the registry's "not applicable" phase label, which the registry uses for studies that do not fit a drug phase. Among the phased trials, phase 2 is the largest group, with 43.

Academic sponsors run 109 of the 191 trials (57%), and industry sponsors run 54 (28%). The pattern depends on the ingredient. Academic groups run 83 of the 116 NR trials. Industry runs 23 of the 33 urolithin A trials and 14 of the 29 NMN trials. Sponsor class is the registry's own label.

Which populations have been studied?

Population (from eligibility criteria) Trials
People with a named condition 109
Healthy adults 47
Healthy older adults 18
Skin or cosmetic volunteers 12
Athletes 3
Other 2
Total 191

Most trials (109) enroll people with a named condition. The most frequent first-listed conditions are amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson disease, with four trials each. Mild cognitive impairment, hypertension, ataxia telangiectasia and Alzheimer disease follow, with three each. Healthy adults (47) and healthy older adults (18) form the next groups. Twelve trials enroll skin or cosmetic volunteers, and three enroll athletes.

Some groups are thin. Five trials set a minimum age under 18, and the youngest minimum is 2 years. Fourteen trials enroll women only, 12 enroll men only, and 165 enroll both sexes. We did not extract pregnancy criteria from the eligibility text, so this census makes no count for pregnant or breastfeeding participants.

One record lists small fiber neuropathy as its condition but enrolls healthy volunteers in a capsaicin model (NCT03912220). We count it under healthy adults and show the registry's condition in the appendix.

Which trials have published results?

Completed trials (92) Trials
Linked publication and posted results 6
Linked publication, no posted results 25
Posted results, no linked publication 10
Neither 51
Total 92

Nineteen trials have posted results on the registry: 16 completed and 3 terminated. Of the 61 completed trials with no linked publication, 32 enrolled fewer than 50 people. The largest completed trial is the NOPARK randomized trial of NR in early-stage Parkinson disease (NCT03568968, 410 registered participants). Its linked paper appeared in JAMA (Brakedal et al., 2026). The registry shows no posted results for it.

A smaller example is the urolithin A trial in distance runners, NCT04783207, with 42 registered participants. Its linked paper, Whitfield et al., 2025, covers running performance in highly trained male distance runners. The registry shows no posted results for it. Our article on the urolithin A running trial, what its time-trial results show, goes through them.

What to take from a small or unpublished trial

A small trial can show that a measure moved in a few people. It cannot show what happens in people generally. Before you lean on one, check four things: how many people finished, whether there was a placebo group, whether the paper reports the primary outcome the registry lists, and whether another team has repeated the result.

A registration with no posted results and no linked paper tells you that a study was planned. For the 51 completed trials with neither, the public record shows that the study ran, not what it found. Of the 191 trials, 99 have not reached completion, and 10 were withdrawn or terminated.

Enrollment matters too. Thirty-four trials register 19 people or fewer, including three withdrawn studies recorded at zero, and a result from that few people can change with one or two participants. When a trial matters to a decision, read the registry entry, the linked paper and the ingredient monograph together. Check the dose as well, against the NMN and NR doses used in the trials.

What this census does not show

  • It grades no outcome. Grading needs outcome data, and this page counts registrations and records what the registry says about them.
  • It covers one registry. Trials registered elsewhere, or not registered at all, are not counted.
  • The search matched names in the intervention field and the summary. A trial that names none of the three compounds in either place would be missed.
  • Dates, enrollment and status are as ClinicalTrials.gov listed them on 20 October 2026. Sponsors update their records on their own schedule.
  • A PubMed link depends on a registration number or a title match. A paper that names neither could be missed, so "none found" means no match, not no paper.
  • Sponsor class is the registry's label, not our judgment of who funded or controlled a study.

What is established, what is proposed, and what would settle it

  • Established (registry, 20 October 2026): 191 trials in scope; 92 completed; 19 with posted results; 31 completed trials with a linked paper; 146 trials registering 99 people or fewer.
  • Proposed (our reading, not a finding): the number of registrations overstates the published evidence. Most of the registered work is small, and finished, published trials make up a minority of the registry.
  • What would settle it: posted results or linked papers for the 61 completed trials without one, especially the 32 that enrolled fewer than 50 people. Completion and publication of the 99 trials that are open, stopped or of unknown status. Results from the largest open trials, including a 650-person urolithin A study in healthy adults (NCT07060898, active, not recruiting) and a 380-person NR study (NCT04562831, active, not recruiting).

Our products, and how to check a label

Two Mt. Angel Vitamins products contain ingredients covered by this census. Whether food can supply urolithin A is a separate question, and why pomegranate juice makes little urolithin A for most people covers it. The label facts and prices below were checked on 20 October 2026.

Product Label amount per serving Servings per bottle Price per day
NMN + NR with Resveratrol and TMG, 60 capsules 2 capsules: 500 mg beta-NMN, 200 mg nicotinamide riboside, 250 mg resveratrol, 50 mg TMG, 50 mg Bioperine, 10 mg zinc 30 $2.00 (one serving a day)
Urolithin A 500 mg, 60 capsules 1 capsule: 500 mg urolithin A 60 $1.50 (one capsule a day)

No record in this census lists more than two of the five ingredients in the NMN + NR serving: NMN, NR, resveratrol, TMG and zinc. Seven in-scope records list two of them, and none lists three. Both product pages link a lot-specific certificate of analysis and say "Made in Oregon" and "Third-party tested." For the wider urolithin A market, see the urolithin A buying guide and the urolithin A complete guide.

Use this checklist before you buy either product:

  1. Serving size and count. The NMN + NR serving is 2 capsules, and a bottle holds 30 servings. The urolithin A serving is 1 capsule, and a bottle holds 60.
  2. Milligrams, not capsules. Put the label amount next to the dose in the study you are reading, and use the same unit.
  3. The form. The NMN + NR label says beta-NMN and nicotinamide riboside, and does not name a salt. If the salt matters to you, ask the maker.
  4. Total zinc. The NMN + NR serving has 10 mg of zinc. Add the zinc from every other supplement you take.
  5. The lot. Match the lot number on your bottle to the certificate of analysis for that lot.
  6. Ask first. The labels say to ask a healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition.

Glossary

  • NAD+: nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a coenzyme that cells use to move electrons during energy metabolism. Trials often measure blood NAD+ as a marker. A rise shows the precursor was absorbed, not that health improved.
  • NMN: nicotinamide mononucleotide, a precursor molecule that cells can convert into NAD+.
  • NR: nicotinamide riboside, a form of vitamin B3 that cells can convert into NAD+.
  • Urolithin A: a compound that gut bacteria produce from ellagitannins, which are found in pomegranates and some other foods.
  • Mitophagy: the process by which a cell removes damaged mitochondria. Mechanism studies of urolithin A describe it. This census does not measure it.
  • ClinicalTrials.gov: the registry of clinical studies run by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Each record lists the design, status, enrollment and, when posted, results.
  • NCT number: the identifier ClinicalTrials.gov assigns to each registered study. It begins with NCT and is followed by eight digits.
  • Interventional study: a study in which researchers assign a treatment or other intervention to participants, then measure the outcome.
  • Observational study: a study that follows or measures participants without assigning them an intervention. Two trials in this census are observational.
  • Trial phase: the stage of testing. Phase 1 looks at safety and dosing in small groups, phase 2 at early signs of effect, phase 3 compares against a control in larger groups, and phase 4 follows use after approval. NA means the registry lists no drug phase.
  • Registered enrollment: the number of participants the registry lists for a study. It may be a target set before the study began, not the final count.
  • Results posted: whether the sponsor has uploaded results to ClinicalTrials.gov. A trial can have posted results, a linked paper, both or neither.
  • PMID: PubMed identifier, the number PubMed assigns to each indexed article.
  • DOI: digital object identifier, a permanent code for a published article that resolves through doi.org.

The Bottom Line

Treat the registry as a list of plans, and each completed trial as one study with its own limits. The registry lists far more NMN, NR and urolithin A trials than there are linked papers. Most of the 191 are small, and only 31 of the 92 completed ones have a paper we could link. For the finished human trials on NR, start with the nicotinamide riboside monograph.

FAQ

How many human trials of NMN, NR or urolithin A are registered?

As of 20 October 2026, ClinicalTrials.gov lists 191 trials that use NMN, nicotinamide riboside or urolithin A as an intervention. We ran 15 intervention searches that returned 376 unique records, and excluded 185 of them. Most exclusions (155) were unrelated trials that a search term happened to match. Of the 191, 189 are interventional and 2 are observational. The count includes withdrawn, terminated and unknown-status records, and the appendix on this page lists every one of them.

How large are these trials, and how long do they run?

Most are small. The median registered enrollment is 48 people, and 146 of the 191 trials register 99 people or fewer. Completed trials are smaller still, with a median of 41 people. Among the 92 completed trials, the median time from registered start to primary completion is 15 months, and the middle half falls between 4 and 28 months. These are registered dates, so they describe the plan and the recorded finish, not what the trial found.

Who sponsors them: companies, universities or governments?

Mostly universities. Academic sponsors run 109 of the 191 trials, industry sponsors run 54, government bodies run 10, individuals run 12, and 6 are classed as other. The split depends on the ingredient. Academic groups run 83 of the 116 NR trials, while industry runs 23 of the 33 urolithin A trials. Sponsor class is the registry's own label, so it describes who is listed as sponsor rather than who controlled the study.

Which populations have been studied, and which have not?

Most trials (109) study people with a named condition, and healthy adults (47) and healthy older adults (18) form the next groups. Twelve enroll skin or cosmetic volunteers, and three enroll athletes. Children are rare: five trials set a minimum age under 18, and the youngest minimum is 2 years. Fourteen trials enroll women only, 12 enroll men only, and 165 enroll both sexes. This census did not extract pregnancy criteria, so it makes no count for pregnant or breastfeeding participants.

Which registered trials have published results?

Nineteen trials have results posted on ClinicalTrials.gov: 16 completed and 3 terminated. Among the 92 completed trials, 31 have a linked paper that we matched in PubMed by registration number or title. Six completed trials have both posted results and a paper, 25 have a paper only, 10 have posted results only, and 51 have neither. A missing link is not proof that no paper exists, because some papers do not name their registration.

What should a reader take from a small or unpublished trial?

Treat it as a question, not an answer. A small trial can show that a measure moved in a few people, but it cannot show what happens in people generally. An unpublished trial with no posted results tells you the study was registered, and little more. Before you rely on one, check how many people finished, whether there was a placebo group, whether the paper reports the primary outcome the registry lists, and whether another team has repeated it. Our [NR monograph](/ingredients/nr-nicotinamide-riboside) places the finished NR trials in context.
