The problem is that most men are not getting enough. About 42% of American adults are vitamin D deficient, and men who spend their days indoors, live above the 37th parallel, or carry extra body weight are at even higher risk. Vitamin D and Testosterone
Men with adequate vitamin D levels have significantly higher testosterone than men who are deficient. This is not a fringe claim. It is supported by both cross-sectional studies and a well-designed randomized controlled trial.
The landmark study here is Pilz et al. (2011), published in Hormone and Metabolic Research. Researchers enrolled 165 overweight, non-diabetic men and randomized them to receive either 3,332 IU of vitamin D3 daily or a placebo for 12 months. The vitamin D group saw total testosterone increase from approximately 10.7 nmol/L to 13.4 nmol/L, which works out to roughly a 25% increase. That 25% number deserves some context. It is clinically meaningful, but it is not going to turn a low-testosterone man into a bodybuilder overnight. Several observational studies have found an association between low vitamin D levels and increased risk of prostate cancer. How Much Vitamin D Do Men Need?
Most men need more vitamin D than the official RDA suggests. The current Recommended Dietary Allowance is 600 IU (15 mcg) for adult men up to age 70 and 800 IU (20 mcg) for men over 70. The Endocrine Society recommends 1,500 to 2,000 IU daily to maintain serum 25(OH)D above 30 ng/mL, and many functional medicine practitioners recommend 2,000 to 5,000 IU for adult men.
Men generally need more vitamin D than women for a straightforward reason: higher body mass. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, which means it gets distributed across body tissue. A 200-pound man needs more D to achieve the same blood level as a 140-pound woman taking the same dose. Body composition matters too. Higher body fat percentage is associated with lower serum 25(OH)D because vitamin D gets sequestered in adipose tissue.
For most men, 2,000 to 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily is a reasonable maintenance range. If you are correcting a known deficiency, your doctor may recommend a higher loading dose for 8 to 12 weeks before stepping down to maintenance.

One more thing: take your vitamin D with a meal that contains some fat. Vitamin D3 is fat-soluble, and absorption improves significantly when consumed with dietary fat.
