Season matters enormously. At Oregon's 44th parallel, the UV Index drops below 3 from October through March. A UV Index of at least 3 is required for your skin to produce any meaningful vitamin D. Time of day matters. UVB rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Early morning and late afternoon sun feels warm but contains mostly UVA, which does not trigger vitamin D synthesis.

Cloud cover and glass block UVB. Sitting by a window does not count. UVB cannot penetrate glass. Heavy cloud cover reduces UVB penetration by 50% or more.

Skin type matters. The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin into six types. Type I (very fair, always burns) produces vitamin D fastest but also burns fastest. Type VI (deeply pigmented, rarely burns) may need 5 to 10 times more exposure to produce the same amount.
