Here is something most supplement brands will not tell you: the FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they hit the shelves. Unlike prescription drugs, which go through years of clinical trials and regulatory review, supplements go to market based on the manufacturer's own assurance that they are safe and accurately labeled. Some manufacturers take that responsibility seriously. Some do not.
This guide walks through exactly how to evaluate supplement quality, read labels properly, understand what certifications actually mean, and spot the brands that are cutting corners. The Supplement Industry Has a Quality Problem. Let's Be Honest About It.
The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) established the current regulatory framework for supplements in the United States. Under DSHEA, supplement manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their products are safe and that label claims are truthful and not misleading. The FDA can take action against unsafe products after they are on the market, but there is no pre-market approval process. This is fundamentally different from pharmaceuticals.
What that means in practice is that anyone can start a supplement brand, contract with a manufacturer (or not), put a label on a bottle, and sell it on Amazon. The barrier to entry is low. Many Amazon-only brands have no physical manufacturing presence, no in-house testing, and no quality team. A 2015 New York Attorney General investigation found that 4 out of 5 herbal supplement products from major retailers did not contain the herbs listed on their labels. A separate study published in BMC Medicine found that one-third of herbal supplements tested contained unlisted ingredients.
Not all manufacturers are created equal. The range of quality in this industry is enormous. On one end, you have companies with pharmaceutical-grade facilities, full-time quality teams, in-house analytical labs, and decades of manufacturing history. On the other end, you have brands that exist entirely as a website, a label design, and a contract with whoever offers the cheapest bulk production. Both types of products sit next to each other on the same shelf. The difference is invisible to most consumers.
When you take a supplement, you are trusting that the bottle contains what the label says it contains, in the amounts listed, without harmful contaminants. That trust is only as good as the manufacturer behind it. The rest of this guide gives you the tools to evaluate that trust.
Third-Party Testing: What the Seals Mean (and What They Don't)
Because the FDA does not test supplements before sale, independent third-party organizations fill the gap. These organizations test products against their label claims (does the bottle actually contain what it says?) and screen for contaminants (heavy metals, pesticides, microbial contamination, undeclared ingredients). Getting a third-party certification is voluntary and costs money, which is exactly why not every brand bothers.
USP (United States Pharmacopeia) is the gold standard for supplement verification. USP tests for identity (correct ingredients), potency (accurate amounts), purity (no harmful contaminants), and dissolution (the product actually breaks down properly in your body). The USP Verified mark means the product passed rigorous testing. Notable brands with USP verification: Nature Made, Kirkland Signature (Costco).
NSF International (NSF Certified for Sport) originally focused on safety testing for water and food. NSF now runs a significant supplement certification program. NSF Certified for Sport is the most relevant for athletes — it tests for banned substances in addition to quality markers. Notable brands: Thorne, Momentous. NSF also offers standard GMP registration and product certification for non-athletes.
ConsumerLab is an independent testing organization that purchases products off the shelf and tests them without the manufacturer's involvement. ConsumerLab publishes the results (pass/fail) for subscribers. This is valuable because it catches products that pass internal testing but fail when purchased through normal retail channels.
Informed Sport / Informed Choice focuses on testing for banned substances. Popular with professional and collegiate athletes who need assurance their supplements will not trigger a positive drug test. Less relevant for the general consumer but a good quality signal.
Third-party testing has limitations. It is batch-specific. A brand that passes testing in January is not guaranteed to pass in July. Certification seals tell you the product met standards at a point in time, not continuously. Also, not having a seal does not automatically mean a product is bad — some high-quality manufacturers perform equivalent testing in-house but have not pursued formal certification. The absence of a seal is a question mark, not an automatic red flag.
How to Actually Read a Supplement Facts Panel
Serving Size and Servings Per Container. Always start here. A bottle might say "60 capsules" but if the serving size is 2 capsules, you have 30 servings, not 60. This is the most common source of confusion. The nutrient amounts listed on the panel are per serving, not per capsule.
Active Ingredients and Amounts. Listed in descending order of weight. Each ingredient shows the amount per serving and the % Daily Value (%DV). Pay attention to the specific form of each ingredient — for example, "Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)" vs just "Vitamin D." The form matters for bioavailability.
% Daily Value (%DV). Based on a 2,000-calorie adult diet. 100% DV does not mean "the optimal amount" — it means "the minimum recommended intake to prevent deficiency in most people." Proprietary Blends (and why they are problematic). A proprietary blend lists the ingredients but only shows the total weight of the blend, not the individual amounts. So a "1,000 mg proprietary blend" of 5 herbs could contain 996 mg of the cheapest herb and 1 mg of each of the expensive ones. You have no way to know. Transparent brands list individual ingredient amounts. We list every ingredient amount individually. If a brand uses proprietary blends, ask yourself why they do not want you to know the specific amounts.
Other Ingredients. These are the inactive ingredients: capsule shells, fillers, binders, flow agents, coatings, flavors, colors. Some are necessary for manufacturing (magnesium stearate as a flow agent is standard and safe). Others are unnecessary (artificial colors, titanium dioxide, high-fructose corn syrup in gummies). Fewer "other ingredients" generally indicates a cleaner formulation.
What Separates a Quality Manufacturer from Everyone Else
GMP Certification. Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) are the FDA's minimum manufacturing standards for supplements, codified in 21 CFR Part 111. GMP covers facility cleanliness, equipment maintenance, personnel training, quality control procedures, record keeping, and complaint handling. All supplement manufacturers are legally required to follow GMP. But compliance is audited infrequently, and some smaller operations cut corners. Look for brands that are registered with the FDA and undergo regular GMP audits.
In-house vs. contracted manufacturing. Some brands manufacture their own products in their own facilities. Others design formulas and hire contract manufacturers (CMOs) to produce them. Neither approach is automatically better, but in-house manufacturing gives a brand more direct control over quality at every stage. When a brand does not own its manufacturing, it is trusting the contract manufacturer's standards.
Testing at multiple stages. Quality manufacturers test raw materials when they arrive (identity, potency, contaminants), test during production (blend uniformity, weight checks), and test finished products before release (label claim verification, microbial testing, heavy metals screening). Some manufacturers only test the finished product. Some do not test at all. The number of testing checkpoints is a strong indicator of quality commitment.
Heavy metals and contaminant screening. Lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic are naturally present in soil and water and can end up in raw botanical ingredients. Quality manufacturers screen every batch of raw materials and finished products for heavy metals. This is not optional if you care about safety. Ask any brand: do you test for heavy metals? If they cannot answer specifically, that is a problem.

Red Flags: When to Walk Away from a Supplement Brand
No traceable manufacturing. If you cannot find out where a product is made, who makes it, or what facility it comes from, that is a red flag. Legitimate manufacturers are transparent about their operations.
Unrealistic claims. "Cures cancer." "Eliminates diabetes." "Reverses aging." Supplements cannot legally make disease claims, and any brand that does is either uninformed about regulations or willfully violating them. Either way, walk away.
Proprietary blends with premium pricing. If a brand charges a premium price but hides individual ingredient amounts behind proprietary blends, they are asking you to trust them while actively withholding the information you need to verify that trust.
Ultra-low pricing with no explanation. Quality ingredients, testing, GMP manufacturing, and third-party certification all cost money. If a product is dramatically cheaper than comparable alternatives, something is being cut. It might be ingredient quality, testing, or both.
Amazon-only brands with no physical presence. Not every Amazon-only brand is bad. But a brand with no website, no facility address, no phone number, and no manufacturing transparency should make you pause. Supplement quality requires infrastructure that many DTC-only startups do not have.
No batch testing or certificate of analysis (COA) availability. Quality manufacturers can provide a COA for any lot number. If a brand cannot tell you the last time their product was tested, or what it was tested for, that tells you something.

Are store brand (generic) supplements safe?
